Open File and Save As dialogs

I've been working on finishing the basic functions: open a file, adjust subtitles and save/save as.

Here are the dialogs (not that much to see, i know):

Starting to look good!!

Have you ever condidert working together with this projekt??? http://home.gna.org/gaupol/

Good point.

That project shares a similar intention: to create a subtitle editor for linux.

Though, there are some nuances. Gnome Subtitles' interface follows a different HCI path (you can note the difference if you compare the main windows of the 2 programs). And also, Gnome Subtitles is based on SubLib, a library specificaly created to manage subtitles.

So, i definately wouldn't mind working together with Gaupol, though i doubt it would be possible to join the 2 projects.

Are you related to Gaupol btw? :)

No I am not, just a Linux user who thinks that there is missing a god subtitle editor for this platform.
I am afraid I do not have the skills to program:)
I see your point, but thought was so similar that development could be put toghter and make a faster progress

Hello! I'm the developer of Gaupol.

I just wanted to say that since we're using different programming languages, we can't directly share code (at least I don't know C#), but I'm interested in copying any cool user interface solutions made in this project. I have been keeping an eye on Gnome Subtitles for a while now and I'm eagerly waiting for the first release. I'm especially interested in seeing the built-in preview.

noup: If there's anything in Gaupol that you want to find out it's done, feel free to email me (otsaloma(a)cc(.)hut(.)fi or post at the Gaupol forums (http://gaupol.mypunbb.com/index.php).

Hi Osmo,

It's good to hear that you're keeping an eye on my project, i have been keeping an eye on Gaupol too. ;)

Though, don't take me wrong, but i think that our two projects should only exist if they are different. Hence, i don't think copying is the way to go. That way we'll just be wasting our time, and i don't see a point on having 2 similar programs.

Still, i'd love to share some ideas with you. Btw, do you know Java?

Well yes you're right about the copying. I did not mean major direct copying, but it's always useful to have some reference and some source for ideas. Also as we're both making GTK subtitle editors, there are some things we're just bound to do in a similar manner. Some minor things like cell renderer behaviour can be copied even if our apps differ in general philosophy.

I haven't tried Gnome Subtitles as I'm not familiar with Mono and you don't have an INSTALL or README file yet. I don't know where Gnome Subtitles is heading and I can't say how much our projects overlap. You probably know that better. Based on the screenshots you have posted the major differences I have noticed are multi-document vs. single document interface and in-line editing vs. editing pane.

I had to learn Java for one introductory programming course at my university. Luckily I have since been able to forget that language. It's not something I'd like to use. Ever.

Ok, i understand what you're saying. What we could do, and i think this would be constructive, was to precisely delineate the objectives for our projects.

You have mentioned 2 critical differences between them. Besides that, i also intend on supporting a wide variety of formats through SubLib. On my mind is also the wish to help on starting to support and promote a new subtitle format, which solves many issues with the current most used formats. (I'm refering to a subtitle format already developed, but it's not certain that it will fit - this has to be studied.)

The major direction to where i'll point Gnome Subtitles is to include the movie and previewers, with a corresponding timeline. This will change completely the user interaction, and some things that are currently implemented won't be necessary in the future. That's basicaly where GS is heading.

Sorry about the lack of documentation, it will be done for the first release but isn't a priority now. About the Java language, i asked you that because c# shares many similarities with it. I actually quite didn't like Java when i "met" it some years ago. I don't love it nor deslike it, as long as it serves its purpose. I must say C# is fitting quite well for GTK#.

To conclude, if you're in the mood to try this language, you're very welcome in "the team". You also are even if you aren't, programming is just the means to an end, and the most important thing is to help with good ideas. ;-)

I believe that preview business will be a major difference between Gaupol and GS, certainly enough to justify both of their existence. I might do some built-in GStreamer based preview eventually, but for now I have no plans to implement that.

Gaupol's focus is more in fixing errors in subtitles already made and allowing fixing as multiple-file batch-processing. I plan to put major focus on correcting common errors in texts based on regular expressions defined in user-editable language or character set specific correction files.

Built-in preview on the other hand allows manually retiming individual subtitles. This is useful if the times are not yet written, or if they contain individual errors. Built-in preview should also be useful for translators.

Does this batch correction vs. manual editing/creating sound to you like the main difference that we would/could have? This kind of a difference just came up in a feature-request on Gaupol forums

http://gaupol.mypunbb.com/viewtopic.php?id=17

And if you plan on learning Python, you're most welcome in the Gaupol "team" ;-). Python should be an easy language to learn.

Starting from the end, i actually haven't found it that hard to read Python code (only reading, writing is a different thing). But still, i think you won't too with C# code.

I think i can see us clearly following 2 different paths. My priority is to implement a movie previewer, maybe with the help of another developer i've already estabilished contact with. In the future, i also intend on creating a module dedicated to subtitle correction in SubLib, though it isn't a priority ATM. I don't intend to implement MDI and batch processing. Gnome Subtitles will be faced more towards synchronization and centered in the movie/audio previewing.

One last question: can you integrate C# code in Python code?

I don't know. I haven't seen or heard that done. I know that you can use C and C++, but I'm not even familiar with using those as I have found everything needed as pre-wrapped Python modules.

If it is possible, it's probably more trouble than it's worth, if you're thinking of using SubLib from within Gaupol.

This is a very interesting discussion, and I think that i shows the power off open source programs/development

about the Python fo C# there is a page about it here

Good reference. From the looks of it, it doesn't look very hard nor unintegrated to use it in Python code. It would introduce an overhead, but without measures one can't say it would count that much.

I was just curious about it, but using SubLib in your Python code could be a good sugestion for me to make, indeed.

One thing that comes to mind, where we can share information is the poorly documented subtitle formats.

I have put some documentation in subversion. It is not included in the source tarball. There are two official documents and the rest are my observations.
http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/gaupol/trunk/doc/formats/

Also in Gaupol TODO file (at the bottom) I have links to SAMI and MPlayerSub documentation
http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/gaupol/trunk/TODO

If you have found some official subtitle file format specifications, that I don't have I'd be interested.

Osmo, i did just a little research on this as of now, because i just intended to develop the parsing engine to support both frame and time-based subtitles. Since SubLib only supports those 2 ATM, i've only studied those ones.

I'll give you some links of sites i bookmarked, but most probably you already have this kind of information:
http://divxstation.com/article.asp?aId=27
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/sub.htm
http://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/subtitles/ssa.html
http://www.robelix.com/sub2srt/formats.shtml
http://subconv.sourceforge.net/

Some of them have info at the beginning, and some at the end. I think we should create a repository for this information, in which we would describe the formats in the same way (without having separate docs for each).
